GNCC Snowshoe – The Race Continues 2018

By on June 14, 2018

Get Ready for the GNCC Snowshoe WV

GNCC SnowshoeMark your calendars! On Sunday, June 23rd and Monday, June 24th, 2018, the challenging Grand National Cross-Country series (GNCC Snowshoe) will resume, with the next leg of this fierce competition scheduled to occur in Snowshoe, West Virginia. Widely regarded as one of the most difficult off-road races in the country, the contest involves hundreds of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), motorbikes, and utility-task vehicles (UTVs). The series occurs over a variety of courses scheduled in different locations set a few weeks apart.

Visit the Snowshoe WV Resort to Watch an Epic Event

If you enjoy the exciting sport of off-road racing, you likely already possess a lot of information about the Grand National Cross Country (“the GNCC”) series. The GNCC Snowshoe race can trace its origins to West Virginia, where an off-road racing enthusiast named Dave Coombs launched the Blackwater-100 outside the small town of Davis during the 1970s. It involved a perilous track of 100 miles crossing rough, unforgiving terrain.

Over the years, the famous race expanded into the GNCC, a series of challenging off-road courses. At the same time, the entry classes available for off-road racing participants in the GNCC Snowshoe increased (to 107) and the length of the course in each series decreased from the original 100 miles. This event now draws off-road racing pros, amateurs, and spectators from around the world. Later this month, you’ll enjoy a wonderful opportunity to attend one of the GNCC races in beautiful Snowshoe WV, a center for winter skiing and athletic competitions on Snowshoe Mountain.GNCC Snowshoe

Come for the GNCC SNowshoe Race, Stay for The Vacation of a Lifetime!

However, it also offers a variety of entertaining activities for visitors: hiking, bicycle riding, golfing, clay shooting, horseback riding, lake activities, and many other tourist attractions. The facility includes a popular spa furnishing outstanding opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation. Additionally, visitors enjoy a variety of shopping and fine dining options.

In addition to luxurious accommodations, the resort supplies fun outdoor and leisure classes (including Yoga, Archery, and a Kid’s Camp). Concerts, special events, and even a local railroad tour provide guests with an appealing list of fun activities. The lovely Snowshoe WV scenery creates an alluring backdrop for all these exciting summer pursuits.

See the GNCC Snowshoe Race in Person

This series of the GNCC bills itself as “the ultimate test” for participants in the sport of cross-country racing. Set on the slopes of West Virginia’s premier ski resort, the race occurs within a designated area used for off-road activities. In addition to their GNCC entry fees paid to the race sponsors, participants and spectators should plan on purchasing 2018 ski lift tickets to reach this venue. The event includes many fun-filled activities, including a zip lining course.

GNCC SnowshoeSome participants will want to arrive a bit early to attend a golf tournament on Friday beginning at 9. a.m. at the resort’s Raven Club. It will help raise money for the 2018 ISDE US trophy team representing the United States during the International Six Days Enduro race in Chile conducted in November – one of the oldest off-road motorcycle races. Some of the GNCC race classes will commence competitions on Friday evening and many amateur races take place on Saturday. Saturday’s events will include a 6 p.m. graduation ceremony for youth who participated in the off-road training events sponsored through GNCC racing. Demonstration rides for Yamaha off-road vehicle occur on both Saturday and Sunday.

This regular event includes a formal wine tasting capped off by a magnificent Sunday morning brunch. Purchase tickets for events on Saturday and Sunday separately, or plan on attending both days (you can even opt to participate in the brunch alone).

Wine and Jazz Festival Returns to Snowshoe

By on June 6, 2018

Wine and Jazz Snowshoe WVOh, sweet summer children, your months have finally come! So, it’s time to celebrate the season at the Snowshoe Mountain Wine and Jazz Festival. A mere fifteen-hundred minutes west of the nation’s capital sits an augustly alpine oasis, Snowshoe Mountain. There, the air is crisp and the atmosphere restorative. In Snowshoe WV, trees meditate, wildflowers sway and bunnies bound; it’s a quixotic bucolic getaway.

Yearly, during West Virginia’s profligate display of organic summer splendor, Snowshoe serves as stage to one of the region’s most enjoyable fetes, the Taste of the Mountain Wine and Jazz Festival. Work-worn guests arrive on the evening of Friday, June 15th; on Sunday the 17th, they checkout rested and ready to win the week.

This year’s program is a tour de force featuring wine pairing opportunities, a grand tasting event and stellar musical performances. Think of it as Coachella for the mid-Atlantic wine-and-cheese set.

This year’s program kicks off at 7:00pm on Friday, June 15th, with a “wine pairing experience.” Project Natale, a 30-year-seasoned jazz quartet, will play you into the night. Feel like cutting a rug? Shed your subdued thing and shake your groove thing!Wine and Jazz Snowshoe WV

The next morning, leisurely awake and take your pick of breakfast options. During the day, book a massage, go for a hike or dive into a book on your balcony. But make it to Skidder Slope by 4:00pm for some smooth jazz, gourmet food samplings, and, of course, plenty of good wine — barefoot kangaroos need not apply. (Are you sure you’re not in Verbier right now? Are you positive that isn’t Prince William doing “the dad shuffle” on the dance floor?)

On Saturday, between 3:30pm and 5:15pm, adult contemporary artists Shane Meade and the Sound will kick off the day’s dulcet sets. Self-described as “soul-infused folk rock, with a splash of jazz and mountain funk,” Shane Meade and company always delight.

Wine and Jazz Snowshoe WVThen, at 5:30pm, Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., a homegrown West Virginian and America’s Got Talent winner, will take the stage and proceed to rock your audible socks. At 9:45pm, Shane Meade and crew come back for a late night acoustic set.

On Sunday, awake and head to the al fresco brunch before checking out, hopping in the car, and cruising back home, refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does that sound like a plan? Go here to snatch up your tickets for the Snowshoe Wine and Jazz Festival. Treat yourselves to a tranquil, gorgeous getaway; because yes, you do deserve it.

roadkill cookoff

Roadkill Cookoff Returns To Snowshoe WV

By on September 26, 2017

The next time you pass some good roadkill near Snowshoe West Virginia, don’t just think “dinner.” Think “Winner.” It’s time for the West Virginia Roadkill Cookoff!

roadkill cookoffFeatured on the Food Network, the Travel Channel, and the Discovery Channel, the annual Snowshoe WV Roadkill Cookoff is a unique culinary event that is returning to the Snowshoe Mountain area once again for 2017. In the Cook-off, amateur chefs from all over the country compete to prepare a dish in which the key ingredient is “any animal commonly found dead on the side of the road.” For mainstream roadkill aficionados, this could include deer, rabbit, and turkey. Edgy and innovative chefs might offer exotic dishes such as groundhog, opossum, squirrel, snake, and crow prepared with curry, sriracha, chipotle, or other spices to complement the bold flavors of the meat. In case you were wondering, none of it tastes like chicken.

Starting on September 29, the annual Autumn Harvest Festival and West Virginia Roadkill Cookoff at Snowshoe Mountain should be a popular destination for both locals and tourists, with up to 10,000 people expected to attend each day through the 30th. If you are not competing in the Roadkill Cook-off, bring a good appetite, purchase a taster’s wristband, and get ready to sample the entries starting at 10:30 a.m. Be sure to put in your bid for the $150 People’s Choice prize to be awarded to the best-tasting and most attractively presented roadkill dishes.

This isn’t your grandma’s roadkill casserole. Expect to find solid hometown classics such as squirrel gravy over biscuits, but prize-winning entries of previous Snowshoe WV Roadkill Cookoff have been creative, including Chinese “Chef Boar-R-D” Noodles, Smashed “Pota-doe” Patties, or “I Wanna Iguana Nachos.” For the linen-napkin crowd, the Roadkill Cook-off competition has featured such dishes as “Venison from Venice,” a braised venison with lightly sauteed portobello mushrooms, toasted pecans, lime-infused rice, and cilantro pesto.

roadkill cookoffThinking about competing in the Roadkill Cookoff yourself or with a team? If you’ve ever passed a bear carcass in the woods and thought, “I bet this would go so well with a teriyaki glaze,” or come up with some tastily innovative solutions to the problem of the rabbits in your garden, the Snowshoe West Virginia Roadkill Cookoff might be the contest you’ve been waiting to join. Entry is free and the complete contest rules are available online. The top cash prize is worth $1200, and all participating teams not otherwise receiving an award will get $100. Don’t you think you should try? Anyone can make chicken. It takes a true adventurer to eat crow.

In evaluating your entry for the Roadkill Cook-off, the judges are looking for are taste, originality, presentation, and showmanship. 25% of the dish must be wild game, and, depending on the original location of the food, points may be deducted for asphalt or gravel. Luckily, all judges, the rules warn us, “have been tested for cast-iron stomachs.” Thankfully, they also have “sworn under oath to have no vegetarian tendencies,” since very few blocks of tofu are killed by passing cars. Make no mistake: The Roadkill Cook-off is definitely a festival for people who appreciate the value of good, hearty meat.

The Autumn Harvest Festival and West Virginia Roadkill Cookoff is a great event to take in West Virginia’s unique blend of humor, rock-hard hometown toughness, and enthusiastic celebration of all that the beautiful fall season in this state has to offer. Come on over to Snowshoe Mountain for some one-of-a-kind arts and crafts, some outstanding local bands, and above all, this unique and unforgettable taste experience this September 29-30, 2017.
