GNCC Snowshoe

2017 GNCC Race Returns To Snowshoe WV

By on June 20, 2017

gncc logoThe GNCC Racing Series is back in action this weekend, and this time it’s heading back to its roots. Held on June 24 and 25, the GNCC Amsoil Snowshoe promises to one of the best events of the year as riders from all over the country put their ATV skills to the ultimate test in the toughest race of the GNCC tour.

The event is held at Snowshoe Mountain resort in Snowshoe WV; just a stone’s throw away from where the original GNCC race, the famed Blackwater 100, was held. To pay homage to the original, the GNCC Snowshoe begins in town in the picturesque Snowshoe village before continuing on up the mountain and traversing some of the most challenging off-road tracks in the country. Riders will be tested by steep hills, huge tree roots, sticky mud and massive bogs that threaten to put a premature end to many riders’ race.

Howard’s Hole

howards holeOne of the highlights of the event is undoubtedly Howard’s Hole, a huge bog that is often all but impassable if not for the help of fans who aren’t afraid to get a little dirty to help riders overcome this obstacle. The starting line is also a great place to be to experience the thrill the roaring engines and the riders taking off on their way across the course. Unlike typical GNCC races that feature a dead-engine start, the GNCC Snowshoe has a live-engine start that sees five riders taking off every 10 seconds to create a truly impressive scene that further adds to the excitement of this special event.

Of course, holding the event at Snowshoe Mountain also offers a level of amenities and luxuries not typically associated with cross-country ATV races. While the stunning natural beauty surrounding Snowshoe WV offers a wide array of picturesque views, attendees also have the opportunity to enjoy all of the world-class amenities and services offered within the village itself. From fantastic shopping and excellent dining opportunities to luxurious accommodations, lively nightlife, miles of mountain biking trails and an amazing mountaintop golf course, Snowshoe truly has something for everyone.

Blackwater 100 – Gone But Not Forgotten

GNCC SnowshoeIt is only fitting that the GNCC holds an event at Snowshoe Mountain seeing as the racing series got its start in nearby Blackwater. The original Blackwater 100 was considered America’s toughest race, and in keeping with this tradition, the GNCC Snowshoe course presents the biggest challenge racers will face all year. Combine the excitement of the year’s most challenging race with the fantastic surrounds of the resort and you’ve got the makings of one of the best ATV events in the country.

All tickets for the event include ski lift tickets to allow visitors to explore the fabulous hills and surroundings, and after the race is over, Snowshoe offers ample opportunities for dining with the family or a few drinks with friends. For all these reasons, the GNCC Snowshoe is the place to be this weekend.

West Virginia’s Greenbrier River Trail

By on April 23, 2017

As if West Virginia wasn’t one of the tourist jewels of the U.S. already, one of the most popular sites in the state is the Greenbrier River Trail. The creativity of West Virginia’s State Park system took a former railroad site within the Greenbrier County and created a lush recreational venue 77 miles long. The appeal of Greenbrier River Trail is the location that evokes memories of West Virginia’s history.

Greenbrier River TrailWelcome To The Greenbrier Trail

The attraction of the Greenbrier River that wends its way through this region provides a calming effect and a kind of “back to nature” aura tourists love. The former rail that once ran through this area is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to spend a week or two communing with nature or enjoying all that the Greenbrier River Trail has to offer. For example, the Greenbrier River Trail is a hiker’s dream. With a nearly 80-mile long hiking trail, hikers have a chance to breathe fresh, clean West Virginia air and enjoy glorious scenery. Start your hike in Marlinton, an old train depot and hike southward through a well forested area.

If hiking isn’t a your reason to visit Greenbrier River Trail, there is the lure of numerous activities like swimming, bicycling, backpacking, and horseback riding.

With the Greenbrier River in close proximity, there’s an opportunity to explore river activities like paddle boating in the warm West Virginia sunshine.

If you are an avid photographer, Greenbrier River Trail will not disappoint. Between the rolling landscape, the natural flora and fauna, the true essence of West Virginia is ready and waiting to be captured.

The Greenbrier River Trail is an ethereal idyll in winter that is simply breathtaking. People also come from miles away to enjoy cross-country skiing and the ample snowfall. Nearby Snowshoe WV provides for a winter wonderland of downhill skiing and snow-tubing.

Raven Golf Course

The Raven Golf Course at Snowshoe WV

By on April 3, 2017

Raven Golf CourseIf you enjoy hitting a tee-shot onto a long fairway, then Raven Golf Course at Snowshoe Mountain will not disappoint. The course is beautifully maintained, as every tee except for one is elevated, as this provides a picturesque scenery before each tee-shot. The locals boast that the course is considered one of the best public golf venues in the state of West Virginia.

Usually, guests come to Snowshoe Mountain to conquer ideal skiing conditions, but many come back in the spring and summer months to have an enjoyable golfing weekend on the Gary Player-designed course. The remnants of snow can be seen high atop the mountain from the 18th green on a cool March day. It’s well-worth the drive through the West Virginia wilderness to play a golf course wrapped around a mountain that offers plenty of shot opportunities.

Raven Golf Course Offers a Challenge!

The Raven Golf Course at Snowshoe Mountain has four sets of tee positions that measures approximately to 7,042-yards for 18-holes. It’s a distance that is a worthy challenge for all parts of a golfer’s overall game. The white tees will make life difficult for all, while the blue tees require an accurate tee-shot and a strong iron game to consistently hit the greens to score par on the day. The greens are quick, but very playable.

Raven Golf CourseEach hole is unique to itself, as the drop from the tee-box to the green could be as much as 200-feet. Even playing a conservative game can still leave your ball on a steep, grassy hill behind the green. The hilly terrain can be brutal for first-time players to the Raven Golf Course at Snowshoe WV, as a golfer will have to walk over five-miles to complete the round.

Golfers must remember that the air’s density is lowest on warm days in higher elevated locations, so they can hit an ideal tee-shot but may have difficulty in executing a decent second shot. Shot placement on the rolling terrain of the fairways will determine if you will shoot for par on the day. Mistakes in judgment often lead to having your ball land in the high rough after a few errand shots.

Often, golfers fail to realize that the course is neatly tucked away in the hills of West Virginia, as it’s a wonderful showcase for nature and the game of golf. Some may be alarmed to see a red-tailed hawk floating high above the fairway, as their cry can heard all throughout the course. The ravine near the greens is home to other wildlife, which can be seen dashing off the fairway at sunrise of each day. Hunting is forbidden on the course and the surrounding area.

A very friendly pro shop, as the club’s staff will take that extra step to make your golfing experience at the course very memorable indeed. They offer a golf club bag storage area, a quick-service driving range and a well-maintained putting green. Even the food and beverage personnel go out of their way to ensure your meal goes without any problems.
