Snowshoe Mountain – The Mid-Atlantic’s Largest Winter Resort

By on December 7, 2017

Snowshoe MountainWith the 2017-18 winter season practically upon us, winter sports enthusiasts are no doubt busily preparing their equipment and making plans to head for their favorite slopes. To most people, the term ‘winter sports’ brings to mind locales such as the Colorado Rockies, Utah, Northern California, or various other ski resort areas generally associated with the western United States. Others may think of such notable European winter sports regions like the Swiss Alps, northern Italy, Norway, Austria and Switzerland. However, one of the fastest-growing and increasingly well-regarded winter sports locations in the eastern U.S. is beautiful Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia.

History of Snowshoe Mountain

Situated in the picturesque Allegheny Mountains chain of the ancient Appalachian Range, Snowshoe is located in West Virginia’s Pocahontas County in the small village of Snowshoe, near the towns of Elkins and Lewisburg. Now in its 43rd consecutive year of operation (opened in 1974), Snowshoe Mountain had previously been the site of extensive logging activity for over half-a-century. Snowshoe MountainA successful ski resort developer, ‘Doc’ Brigham, took notice of Snowshoe’s unlimited potential, and although it took several years before his ambitious vision began to fulfill the promise he had hoped for, he was ultimately rewarded as Snowshoe Mountain soon became one of the East Coast’s most popular winter sport destinations. During the 1990s, Snowshoe underwent several expansion upgrades and improvements, most notably the development of a surrounding village that included condominiums and other commercial ventures as well as new ownership.

Snowshoe Mountain – An Island in The Sky

Snowshoe MountainSnowshoe Mountain varies in elevation from between roughly 3,300 to 4,850 feet above sea level and offers skiers 244 acres of skiable terrain that features every imaginable skill level from the inexperienced novice beginner to the extremely challenging veteran. Snowshoe also provides night skiing in its Silver Creek area, and with 14 professionally staffed chairlifts that are capable of transporting more than 23,000 skiers an hour, annoying waiting time is virtually nonexistent. Snowshoe’s winter climate (average January temperature is 28° F.) provides absolutely near-perfect conditions for winter sports, receiving an average of 180 inches of annual snowfall, and even in the nearly unheard of occasion of a ‘snow drought,’ the resort has 100% snow-making capability, ensuring plenty of white powder for their visitors to enjoy.

Plenty of FUN at Snowshoe Mountain!

With 60 ski runs (the longest a thrilling mile-and-a-half), Snowshoe offers not only a unique skiing adventure guaranteed to satisfy the most demanding of enthusiast, the surrounding mountain scenery is of the breathtaking variety that is certain to please visitors who have an appreciation for unmatched sightseeing opportunities. Snowshoe MountainIn addition to Snowshoe’s world-class skiing, the resort also provides snowboarding, tubing, snow-cat tours, horseback riding, sleigh rides, nature hikes, and even offers in-season lessons in a variety of activities, whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or an advanced winter sports fanatic. Younger visitors, as well as the entire family, will find nearly endless fun-filled activities (bounce houses, wall climbing, inflatable slides, zip-lines, etc) at The Big Top, a multipurpose facility that also hosts top-flight comedy and musical entertainment, movies and special events.

The Village at Snowshoe Mountain

Snowshoe MountainAt the quaint and charming Village at Snowshoe Mountain, visitors will find more than ample options when it comes to dining and shopping among the many retail outlets and wide variety of cafes, diners and restaurants, ranging from cozy home style to fine upscale cuisine. Lodging at Snowshoe Mountain is also top-rate and plentiful, whether your stay is for a day, overnight, a weekend or for an extended period. GNCC Snowshoe

2017 GNCC Race Returns To Snowshoe WV

By on June 20, 2017

gncc logoThe GNCC Racing Series is back in action this weekend, and this time it’s heading back to its roots. Held on June 24 and 25, the GNCC Amsoil Snowshoe promises to one of the best events of the year as riders from all over the country put their ATV skills to the ultimate test in the toughest race of the GNCC tour.

The event is held at Snowshoe Mountain resort in Snowshoe WV; just a stone’s throw away from where the original GNCC race, the famed Blackwater 100, was held. To pay homage to the original, the GNCC Snowshoe begins in town in the picturesque Snowshoe village before continuing on up the mountain and traversing some of the most challenging off-road tracks in the country. Riders will be tested by steep hills, huge tree roots, sticky mud and massive bogs that threaten to put a premature end to many riders’ race.

Howard’s Hole

howards holeOne of the highlights of the event is undoubtedly Howard’s Hole, a huge bog that is often all but impassable if not for the help of fans who aren’t afraid to get a little dirty to help riders overcome this obstacle. The starting line is also a great place to be to experience the thrill the roaring engines and the riders taking off on their way across the course. Unlike typical GNCC races that feature a dead-engine start, the GNCC Snowshoe has a live-engine start that sees five riders taking off every 10 seconds to create a truly impressive scene that further adds to the excitement of this special event.

Of course, holding the event at Snowshoe Mountain also offers a level of amenities and luxuries not typically associated with cross-country ATV races. While the stunning natural beauty surrounding Snowshoe WV offers a wide array of picturesque views, attendees also have the opportunity to enjoy all of the world-class amenities and services offered within the village itself. From fantastic shopping and excellent dining opportunities to luxurious accommodations, lively nightlife, miles of mountain biking trails and an amazing mountaintop golf course, Snowshoe truly has something for everyone.

Blackwater 100 – Gone But Not Forgotten

GNCC SnowshoeIt is only fitting that the GNCC holds an event at Snowshoe Mountain seeing as the racing series got its start in nearby Blackwater. The original Blackwater 100 was considered America’s toughest race, and in keeping with this tradition, the GNCC Snowshoe course presents the biggest challenge racers will face all year. Combine the excitement of the year’s most challenging race with the fantastic surrounds of the resort and you’ve got the makings of one of the best ATV events in the country.

All tickets for the event include ski lift tickets to allow visitors to explore the fabulous hills and surroundings, and after the race is over, Snowshoe offers ample opportunities for dining with the family or a few drinks with friends. For all these reasons, the GNCC Snowshoe is the place to be this weekend.
